Lijiang Studio is an artistic residency program welcoming international and Chinese artists. The program is not a retreat for artists but a laboratory thrusting artists into a specific location - called Lashihai (a Naxi farming village next to the famous old town of Lijiang) - with the expectation that basic human creativity and the experience of community will connect them to this place and generate meaning. Equally, the local Lashihai people who are willing to participate with these visiting artists become agents representing their own culture to the outside world. Through this residency program, exhibitions, and other projects at Lashihai and elsewhere, as well as workshops run by the visiting artists, Lijiang Studio is effectively questioning the way artists engage with society. Lijiang Studio's team intends these experiments to diversify the world of contemporary art and to enrich local culture.
