Tailor-made art tours can be organized according to each client's requirements to give an overview of what is happening in the Beijing art scene. Urs Meile Gallery, which opened in Beijing in 1996, has the distinction of being one of the first Western galleries with an engagement in the Chinese art scene. Three Shadows Photography Museum was opened by Rong Rong and Enri. Other significant art institutions in Beijing include Platform China, Pekin Fine Art, and Shanghart, which has recently opened a second space in Beijing. In the same area, there are many artists' villages as well as home studios and galleries.
18 Art district and Shunyi are others areas which continue to develop. The North-east art district's landscape is growing at a rapid pace. Some places no less influential are located downtown, such as the famous Red Gate Gallery at Dongbianmen Watchtower, the first gallery that opened in Beijing. There is also the Today Art Museum, a unique museum dedicated to contemporary art. Independent art initiatives, small but nevertheless important, flourish all around Dongcheng's hutongs, contributing to the downtown artscape.
